It’s simple; really, I like to; BUT that wasn’t always the case. In my 40’s and 50’s, I believed I was in OK shape. I could run a couple of times a year, and my pace was slow, but I’d make it a mile or two.
Hey, I was working and traveling and who had the time. Business is business, and after meetings, we’d do dinner, a few drinks then back to my room for work. Some mornings I’d hit the hotel gym lift a few weights and think, not too bad.
My weight was a little heavier about 225 to 240, but hey, I knew in no time I could get to 210 or 215. But my shape was very different than before. My 38 pants were tight – even the ones with elastic that would go to 40, and I was out of breath walking one flight of stairs.
Eventually, I had a “TIA,” a mini-stroke. The event didn’t last long, but the impact has lasted over 11 years. I got a glimpse of what life could be like: loss of vision, paralysis on one side, and absolutely nothing I could do about it.
When hospitalized, they ran every test imaginable – it cost a fortune. The result I had nothing wrong with me. Great I thought until the doctor told me I would die too soon if I didn’t make some changes. Yes, I was scared, and yes, I was motivated, and I was newly married.
My wife, Kim, and I went to the park that weekend and decided to walk around the track three miles. We made it about a quarter of the way, found a bench, sat down, rested, got back to the car, rested, drove home, and took a nap.
Something had to change.
We began to study how to get in shape. We read everything, met, and worked out with some of the best trainers around, trainers for the Hollywood elite, trainers for professional athletes.
We talked with Olympic Gold medal winners. We learned everything we could. Much of what we were learning was not backed by science and aimed at 18 to 35 year old’s. We were in our 50’s! When we began to study and train with Bill Phillips, author of Body for Life and Eating for Life, we finally learned the simple, safe, sustainable, efficient, and effective way to improve our health and fitness.
Face it; the information we found isn’t backed by science and aimed at 18 to 35-year-olds. We were in our 50’s!!!
But we saw what works, and in eight months, we each lost 40 lbs., gained mobility, increased our stamina, and frankly had better lives with way more energy. It wasn’t easy, but it was simple, and it didn’t require much more than about 30 to 45 mins a day a few days a week.
It’s simple enough that we’ve been able to maintain our results for 11 years. We have an active lifestyle we can hike, swim, run and bike without worry of running out of gas (unless we want to push it).
