We often hear that we are the sum of the five people we spend the most time with, but do we understand the impact our relationships have on our health, happiness, and overall success? It’s more significant than most of us realize. Whether you’re on a journey to improve your fitness, career, or personal development, the people you surround yourself with can lift you up or hold you back.
The Power of Relationships on Your Health
Research from the journal PLOS Medicine highlights that social relationships directly impact our physical health. In fact, the study found that strong social connections improve survival rates by 50%, comparable to the effect of quitting smoking! Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people has real, measurable benefits for your health.
But here’s the thing: not all relationships are healthy. Sometimes, we stay in friendships or situations that drain us because we fear change or confrontation. We sacrifice our peace, energy, and wellness to avoid difficult conversations or maintain the status quo. Over time, this can wear us down, leading to stress, anxiety, or even burnout.
Setting Boundaries for Growth
Setting boundaries is essential for protecting your energy and staying aligned with your goals. It’s not about cutting people out of your life—it’s about creating space for the right relationships to flourish. Boundaries empower you to define what’s acceptable and what isn’t, ensuring that the people in your life respect your journey.
Whether it’s your commitment to regular workouts, meal prep, or time for mental well-being, those who truly care about you will honor those boundaries. They’ll celebrate your progress, not criticize it, and cheer you on instead of offering distractions.
Why It Matters for Your Health Journey
When working toward a health and fitness goal, surrounding yourself with the right people is especially important. The people around you directly influence your mindset, habits, and motivation. If you’re constantly surrounded by negativity or those who don’t value your goals, it’s much harder to stay on track. On the other hand, supportive relationships fuel your determination and push you closer to success.
3 Tips for Building a Supportive Circle:
1. Identify Uplifting Relationships: Take a look at the people in your life. Who energizes you? Who encourages your growth? Make an effort to nurture those connections.
2. Communicate Your Boundaries: Let those around you know what you need—whether uninterrupted time for your workouts or support with healthy eating. Setting clear boundaries helps others understand how they can contribute positively to your goals.
3. Let Go of the Toxic: If certain relationships consistently drain your energy or steer you off course, it might be time to distance yourself. You deserve relationships that help you grow, not ones that hold you back.
This post hit home for me because I see the power of positive relationships every single day in our community. You inspire each other, lift each other, and celebrate each other’s wins—and that is what makes reaching your goals so much easier (and more fun!).
But here’s the truth: Sometimes, we hold onto relationships that don’t serve us. Maybe it’s out of habit or fear, but those relationships can drain your energy and sabotage your progress. And you deserve better than that!
Here’s my challenge to you: Take an honest look at your circle. Who energizes you? Who supports your goals? And who might be holding you back?
It’s time to set some boundaries, my friend. Protect your energy. Nurture the relationships that lift you higher, and don’t be afraid to step away from those that don’t. Remember, you ARE the company you keep. Choose wisely, and watch yourself soar!
