When I was young, it seemed like Christmas took forever to arrive, my birthday was far, far away, and the school day and the entire week felt extremely long and drawn out.
The hands-on classroom clock never moved, so it seemed. Time moved slow back then. I recall a conversation about the time I had with my mom when I was in middle school. As she was preparing us grilled cheese and tomato soup, she said, “just you wait, when you get to be my age, time will fly by, you’ll see.”
I’m now years past the age my mom was then, and if there was ever a time when mom was right (well, mom is always right), but if there was EVER a time mom was right, it was that moment.
Time waits for no one. It marches on with or without you, and it ticks off by the second.
In the spring of 2012, I discovered that you would find the time to do something. I learned this firsthand when I accepted a challenge to test not only if I could find extra time in my day, but could I complete something I started?
I’m going all day, lots to do, work, keep house, run a business, you know, we’re all in that spot where we fall into bed at the end of the day, and often feel like we didn’t make a dent in our to-do list.
I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2002, passionate and eager to help others, and I’m all over the place with ideas daily. I start projects, and then I start more projects, and I create many plans and ideas on napkins, envelopes, scrap paper, box lids, post-it-notes.
Then I put some in a drawer; some are in a notebook, some are on a shelf, some are stuffed in my purse, some are in the back of a closet because I said, I will start it tomorrow. I will finish it tomorrow. Do you have a closet filled with projects you have not started or finished?
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, to be exact, my challenge began. I started a 365 Project. I was to create something daily for 365 days.
Yes, you read that right. Every day I had to make something relating, photograph, and journal about it.
I had no clue what to do. As I sat at my desk, I looked down at my hands and thought,’ hand.’ I will make each day revolve around my ‘hand.’ I selected the topic’ hands,’ and the rest, as they say, is history. Did I make it the 365 days?
I am proud to say, YES! I completed the task and reached hand #365 on Saturday, May 4, 2013.
It was the most rewarding, loving, humbling, fun, and exciting year ever! Not only did I honor my word to myself, but I proved that I could start and finish a project. I confirmed that if I really wanted to reach a goal, I could.
Most importantly, I proved that I have time in the day to do what’s truly important to me. You see, this 365 project was so important to me that I found the TIME to work on it daily. Little by little, each day brought me closer to my goal.
I realized I needed to make time for me, lifelong. This situation was way more difficult than I imagined.
Two years prior, my husband had a mini-stroke, and we were told straight up by the doctor that if we wanted a long life together, we needed to lose weight and get in shape.
We were scared, we got to work and what I found was once it was important to us, time was not an issue. I can tell you with 100% confidence that I never had time to take care of me before this situation.
I know I’m not alone because I hear it all the time. I’m too busy, and I have too much going on right now; I’m starting a new ____ (fill in the blank).
We understand because we were there, but I realized with the hand project that I could find time again, and when my husband faced a health scare, I went to the mirror and took a good look. I looked deep into my eyes and said I am my priority; I am worthy of my time and time for my health.
I honestly felt a little selfish for saying this, but I knew that I had to take care of myself in my heart. I knew from my ‘hand project’ that I could find the time. I did, and I’ve been grateful every day that I decided to take care of me.
It’s been over a decade, and time does fly, but our fitness is part of our lifestyle. We lead a life with more mobility, energy, and vitality than we ever thought possible 10 to 15 years ago–and you can do it too.
I have a ‘hand’ for you to hold on to… take the step today.

Love this and so true. This is what I am trying to do, to get my life and fire back. Being sick and being a caregiver really knocked me down but I am coming back-slowly but surely and am trying to learn new things. Have learned a lot from you. This is what you were meant to do. I remember fondly your “hand” project. You were amazing at it.
