If someone asked you how many days you worked out last year, could you answer? Most people can’t. For many years I could answer that with a simple zero unless you count walking the dog!
How many years did you plan to take better care of yourself and maybe even began then life happened, and you started again before – summer, birthday, anniversary, wedding?
If the above sounds true, Congratulations, you are in the majority!
Most of us start, stop, try, give up, and just plain run out of time. What if I told you there is a straightforward way to help you get started and stay on track?
Eleven years ago, when my wellness journey began, I received some great advice – write down my workouts. Simple as it sounds, I took it to heart.
I purchased a huge, year-at-a-glance wall calendar; this wasn’t just any wall calendar; this one was laminated and pinned to the wall with thumbtacks. As I worked out, I would mark the days and even added some special marks for good nutrition and extra effort.
It became my ritual, and I enjoyed making my marks and celebrating my wins.
It was also a glaring reminder if I missed a day or two or a week! This one calendar showed all my baby steps, and over time, it showed my consistency and growth. The results began to unfold like a beautiful flower. The change took place on the inside and then showed outward—the calendar of LOVE and self-care.
When you are on a wellness journey, it is critical to document your success and celebrate every win. Having a big year at- a- glance wall calendar allows you to see your progress.
Right before your eyes, your habit of transformation is developing. The goal here is to see more marks than blanks or red X’s. When you use a large calendar and keep track, you become aware of areas of strength.
You worked out five days a week for two weeks, then a month; it’s a great confidence builder. Maybe (like pretty much everyone I know) you need to improve your nutrition. You can add a check to all the days you were on plan. As the days add up, the positive reinforcement adds up also.
I know many are into technology and keeping track of everything on their phone these days. I want to encourage you to go old school and hang a full year-at-a-glance calendar on the wall.
It will stare you in the face, inspire you, and remind you to get up and get going. Plus, it’s just fun to have a visual of what a great year you had. A reflection of your daily effort is a huge motivator.
Here are a few tips for making your mark and celebrating your wins
- Use a full year at- a- glance calendar. I have found people who use a monthly calendar forget to turn the page, and before they know it, three months have passed. I know some who use their phone and an alarm to remind them. Often they turn off the alarm out of sight, out of mind. The calendar is not going anywhere; it’s there looking right back at you.
- Place the calendar in a spot where you will see it daily.
- Be creative. Use color markers, stickers, and post-it-notes with inspiring messages.
- Photograph it monthly and show accountability to your coach/teammates. You will be inspiring them.
- Take an assessment of where you are week to week regarding your goals. Immediately you can see where you can adjust moving forward.
We have tasks to do in our daily lives, but we fail to notice them because we lack a method for acknowledging our progress; this is a considerable loss.
When you have a system to measure your progress, you will always know you are moving forward in the right direction. Seeing your transformation progress and celebrating your daily wins gives you confidence, and you don’t feel overwhelmed.
The calendar keeps you on track, inspiring you one day at a time. ONE day, that’s it. Just take it ONE DAY at a time.
