Let’s face it—there will come a time when you’ll want to quit. You’ll hit that point in your fitness or health journey when the soreness is too much, the motivation feels too low, or life throws endless obstacles. That voice in your head will tell you, “Just take a break” or “This isn’t working fast enough.” But here’s my most important piece of advice: Do. Not. Quit.
Why? Because this is the moment when real change happens.
When you push through the urge to quit, you prove you are stronger than your doubts. The results you crave—whether weight loss, muscle gain, more energy, or a better mindset—are waiting just beyond that point of resistance.
3 Tips to Keep Going When You Want to Quit:
1. Remember Your WHY : Why did you start? Return to that reason, whether it’s for your health, your family, or feeling stronger and more confident. Write it down. Keep it in front of you. Studies show that people with a clear purpose are likelier to follow through on their commitments. So, whenever you feel like giving up, revisit your WHY. Let it drive you forward.
2. Set Small, Achievable Goals: It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when your goals feel too big or distant. Break them down into smaller steps that you can tackle daily. If your long-term goal is to lose 30 pounds, focus on losing 1-2 pounds weekly. Celebrate every small victory along the way. Harvard research confirms that goal setting and achieving small milestones increase motivation and help people stick to their health plans.
3. Find Your Support System: Surround yourself with people encouraging and inspiring you. Whether it’s a fitness coach, a workout buddy, or a supportive community, having people in your corner makes all the difference. Studies show that social support improves adherence to fitness programs and boosts overall success. So don’t go at it alone—lean on others for encouragement when it gets tough.
Scientific Fact: Persistence Pays Off
According to a study published in The American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, individuals who stuck to their exercise programs for six months saw significant improvements in their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The study emphasized that consistency is key to long-term success. In other words, sticking with your routine will lead to results you can see and feel even when it feels tough.
The Real Breakthrough Happens After You Want to Quit
Remember, wanting to quit is normal. We all experience it at some point. But the difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is simple: They don’t give up. They keep pushing, even when it’s hard. They trust the process, stay consistent, and believe in the journey.
So, when that voice whispers to you that it’s time to quit, shut it down. Dig deep, find your WHY, and remind yourself you’re worth the effort. Every workout, every healthy meal, and every positive choice you make is a step toward a healthier, stronger you.
You’ve got this.
