My Go-To Warm-Up Routine (and Why It Matters!)

My Go-To Warm-Up Routine (and Why It Matters!)

Kim Knapp

Before every great workout comes one very important step, the warm-up. It’s easy to want to skip it when you’re short on time, but those few extra minutes are one of the best investments you can make in your health, safety, and performance, especially for those of us 50 and over.

Why Warm-Ups Matter

A proper warm-up does more than “get the blood flowing.” It helps:

  • Increase muscle temperature for better flexibility and range of motion.
  • Boost circulation and oxygen to working muscles.
  • Prepare joints and connective tissue for movement, protecting against injury.
  • Prime your nervous system, so your body is ready to lift, move, and react with control.
  • Mentally transition you into workout mode, leaving distractions behind and focusing on your body.

Think of it like this: you wouldn’t start your car in the middle of winter and floor the gas. You let it warm up first. The same goes for your body.

My Go-To Warm-Up Routine

On strength days:

I lift and lower dumbbells four days a week, with two upper-body sessions and two lower-body sessions. My first set of every exercise is always my warm-up set. I use lighter weights to practice form, wake up the muscles, and get blood moving before increasing resistance. My first round gives my body time to “find its groove” before I challenge it with heavier weights.

On cardio days:

Before I run, hop on the bike, row, or use the elliptical, I warm up with 5–10 minutes of movement that mimics what’s ahead, easing my body into a rhythm.

Example cardio warm-up moves:

  • Marching in place or light jogging
  • Grapevines (side steps with rhythm, great for hips and coordination!)
  • Butt kicks
  • Gentle walking lunges
  • Dynamic hamstring and calf stretches

This routine gradually increases my heart rate and prepares my muscles, joints, and tendons for higher-intensity work. Regardless of your age or fitness level, warming up is a non-negotiable step.

It’s your body’s way of saying, “Let’s get ready to do something amazing.” Even five minutes of intentional movement before your workout can reduce your risk of injury, improve performance, and make the entire session feel smoother and stronger. You don’t have to go hard right away. You have to start smart.

So next time you pick up those dumbbells or lace up your sneakers, take a few minutes to prepare. Your body (and your future self) will thank you.
