There are some days; the battle begins with the two voices inside me.
One says, “sit a while, stay in your jammies, sip on your coffee, watch the next episode, you have time,” and the other says, “get up, get dressed and get going.”
Ten years ago, the old me would have eaten another doughnut, sipped coffee, and watched the next episode, and say, “I’ll get to it tomorrow.”
That is the moment of choice. All you have is the here and now.
We can sit and procrastinate and be lazy, or we can close our eyes, envision our dreams, review our whys, look at our goals and plan for the day, and get up, get dressed, and get moving!
Do you want to improve? Do you want to feel better? Do you want to start an exercise program? Do you want to start making healthy choices? Do you want those jeans, in the back of your closet, to fit again?
Start. Right here and now.
Take action; it’s your choice. No one is going to do it for you. No one will exercise for you, eat for you, or improve you or make you feel better.
These are things within your control, right now. You have to do it, and it begins now. A dream is always a dream unless you have clear goals to make them come true.
Pencil to paper, write your dreams. Make them BIG! Maybe you have always wanted to be a swimmer. It’s never too late!
Set goals that are reasonable and detailed, not vague. Goals are the steps to make our dreams come true. Goals should be measurable, and ones you can achieve. When we lack clear, defined plans, we lack motivation.
The key here is to make a note of your desires. Put pencil to paper and write them down. If what you want to do is learn to swim or become a better swimmer.
Drill down to the details and write;
I will join the gym.
I swim four days a week.
I will drink water.
I will eat better.
I will journal daily.
By doing this, you have something concrete to aim for; you have a plan.
How are you going to do this? Plan and prepare, with a pencil to paper. In addition to writing down your dreams and goals, you’ll want to create your plan the night before for the next day.
If you don’t know where you are going, how are you going to get there? Identify the steps you are going to take. Break your goal down into small steps.
People tend to skip this task the most, and the result is they fall off the track, flounder, and before you know it, the train has left the station, and two months have passed.
A vague goal would be to exercise daily. Outline how your daily exercise routine looks.
Using our swimmer example, you could write:
I will show up at the gym on Monday at 6:00 am, meet my mentor, swim eight laps to work towards 12 laps by July 15.
Celebrate the WINS. Look back at your progress, allow for downtime and rewards. Part of your plan is to work efficiently and effectively. Make good use of your time. You’ll want to plan for a rest day every week.
You can do something you’ve wanted to do, like take a day trip to the local art museum, go to a new restaurant, try a new sport, head to the lake or mountains, or do nothing!
Reaching your goals, you WIN! You swam those 12 laps and celebrated by treating yourself to a new swimsuit or nice fancy dinner.
Spoiling yourself is OK… remember YOU are worthy of your dreams!
