Mistake #6: Letting the Scale Dictate My Worth

Mistake #6: Letting the Scale Dictate My Worth

Kim Knapp

It’s been 14 years since I began my fitness and health lifestyle. Looking back, I’m grateful for all the mistakes I made along the way. These mistakes have been valuable lessons that have shaped my journey. To this day, I’m still on a learning curve, always working to improve and make gains, both in knowledge and strength.

Early in my wellness journey, my world revolved around my bathroom scale. It was front and center in my bathroom. I would wake up, shuffle to the bathroom, empty my bladder, and stand on the scale. I did this every other day; depending on the number, I felt excited or let down.

What did this do to me? Weighing myself all the time wasn’t helping me; it was adding a layer of worry and making me feel like I wasn’t doing things right because the scale wasn’t moving in the direction I wanted it to, in the time I wanted it to. I was skipping meals and adding on extra workouts here and there to speed things along. I got off track from my Body for Life program and needed to follow the detailed instructions. I was giving the scale way too much power.

I got back on track and stuck to the BFL program. This plan creates the right conditions for our body to thrive. I learned my focus should be on all my gains, not my losses. Who cares what the scale says? Once I began to focus on how I was feeling, how my clothes fit, my strength and energy levels, and my sleep quality, I was in a much better headspace. I took my power back and kicked the scale to the curb!

Why the Scale Should Not Be Your Focus
The bathroom scale number combines lean mass, fat mass, and water weight. It does not truly reflect your body’s health metrics. The scale can fluctuate daily due to numerous factors, such as water retention, hormonal changes, and muscle gain. Therefore, using the scale as your sole measure of progress can be misleading and demotivating.

Tips for Measuring Success Without the Scale

  1. Track How You Feel: Pay attention to your overall well-being. Notice improvements in your energy levels, mood, and mental clarity. Feeling good is a significant indicator of progress.
  2. Monitor How Your Clothes Fit: Your clothes can tell you a lot about your body changes. Notice if they feel looser or fit better in different areas.
  3. Strength and Endurance Gains: Track your workouts. Are you lifting heavier weights? Can you run longer or faster? Improvements in your physical abilities are excellent indicators of progress.
  4. Body Measurements: Use a tape measure to track changes in your body measurements over time. This will give you a clearer picture of fat loss and muscle gain.
  5. Photographic Evidence: Take progress photos at regular intervals. Seeing visual changes in your body can be incredibly motivating and provide a more accurate reflection of your progress.
  6. Sleep Quality: Good sleep is a sign of a healthy body. Track your sleep patterns and notice if you are sleeping better and feeling more rested.

Lesson Learned
The scale only tells part of the story. Focus on other indicators of progress, like how you feel, how your clothes fit, and the improvements in your strength and endurance. Progress is more than just a number. Reclaim your power and improve your mindset.
