In our world, it’s easy to forget that nature is our home – a realm of power, mystery, and endless possibilities. I recently watched ALONE, cheering for Karie Lee as each episode passed. If you have not watched ALONE, I highly recommend you take the time to do so.
Inspiring and oh-so-intense, you will learn how much protein a squirrel serves up. Who knew?
For many, stepping into the wilderness with minimal belongings would seem like a nightmare. But for Sandpoint resident Karie Lee Knoke, this was a dream come true. Today, we bring you the thrilling story of Karie’s survival journey, where physical and mental strength became her allies in the face of daunting challenges.
Karie nurtured a deep connection with nature from a young age, finding solace in the backpacking and canoe trips with her family. Her youthful desire to explore the wilderness with nothing but a knife – inspired by the book “My Side of the Mountain” – blossomed into an incredible achievement in her 50s.
Karie tested her survival skills in the History Channel’s “Alone” series, where participants endure extreme conditions with limited resources, eyeing a grand prize of $500,000.
As an adventurer at heart, Karie sought to retrain her mind and body for this challenge rather than building extra muscle. She banked on her existing strength, prepped her mind for resilience, and consciously decided to gain weight, adding 25 pounds to her frame before the journey. Despite the countless technicalities and uncertainties leading up to her departure, Karie remained focused and prepared to embrace the unknown.
The transition from a close-knit group of participants to solitude in Labrador, Canada, was a real shock. But Karie relied on her mental strength and swiftly adapted to the quiet. With an approaching storm, she had to put her survival instincts into action, building a shelter and bracing for the wilderness’s trials.
Instead of a family photo, Karie chose a sticker saying “Do Your Dream” to accompany her. This little talisman kept her anchored in her purpose, reminding her that she was living her childhood dream at 57. This affirmation helped her stay focused on the present instead of looking back or worrying about her standing in the competition.
Karie’s incredible resilience carried her through 75 days in the wilderness. She overcame dwindling food sources and declining health, knowing when to listen to her body and make the difficult decision to end her journey.
Although she didn’t take the grand prize, Karie’s experience was beyond winning and losing. She described the journey as “euphoric” and would not hesitate to undertake it again.
Today, Karie leverages her experience and knowledge to help adults reconnect with nature through her Sacred Cedars Wilderness School. With various classes aimed at different experience levels, she encourages adults to disconnect from their screens and form a deeper relationship with the natural world around them.
Karie’s journey inspires us all, especially those who feel they’re past their prime. Age, as Karie proved, is just a number. Your spirit, courage, and will to overcome the odds define you. If Karie can live her childhood dream at 57, so can you! It’s always possible to explore, to grow, and to push your boundaries.
