Like most kids, I thought my parents were old. In my child’s mind, my grandparents were ancient. Like most teens, when I heard the word retirement, I pictured a frail elderly couple, sitting in rocking chairs, reading the newspaper.
Through the years, life happens. We get married, have children, or get busy. We’re not thinking about aging or self-care, for that matter. One day you look around, and you’re over the hill! I’m laughing; yes, I’m now at the age that I thought was ancient when I was a kid.
We can’t change the fact that we will all age if we’re lucky. But we don’t have to be OLD. Yes, we may have some limitations, but I prefer to think of them are redirections. You know the saying, “when one door closes, another one opens” well, that’s true for all of us. The key is to focus on the possibilities.
Dream big, set goals, take steps. A baby step is still a step forward. Don’t think for a minute that’s too late. I’m here to let you know that it’s never too late to take action. There is a way.
Here are 7 tips for finding your JOY
- Things change as we move through our life. Accepting the things we can’t change is a critical piece of the puzzle. We must focus on all the things in our control and what we can change and let go of all the things we can’t change. Shift the mindset and have a can-do attitude.
- Stay healthy in mind by looking for the silver lining. Look at challenges as opportunities for personal growth. We all make mistakes. The key is to forgive, then step onward.
- When life throws us a challenge, look for the laughter at the absurdities of life. Laughter is medicine for the body and mind. Laughter helps you stay energetic and youthful. Don’t you feel great after a good belly laugh, with tears rolling down your cheeks?
- Be a helper—volunteer for a cause that is important to you. Get involved in your community.
- Get outside and play. Hike, swim, walk, camping, photography, etc. Spend time in nature.
- Find a support group. Having a group of people who understand what you are going through is helpful. They may be experiencing the same challenges and will be encouraging and supportive.
- Take action to transform your body. Take steps to wellness exercise, nutrition, and mindset. Change begins within and expressed outwardly. JOY will naturally shine from your eyes, and your smile will say it all!
