At 66, I’m always on the lookout for ways to stay strong, mobile, and healthy from head to toe. Recently, I’ve taken on a new adventure that’s got me thinking (and walking) differently: exploring barefoot shoes.
Like many of you, I’ve spent decades wearing thick-soled, heavily cushioned sneakers. I’ve trusted brands like Brooks and Asics for walking, running, and everyday movement. But something shifted. I began noticing that the natural padding on the bottoms of my feet—what’s called the “fat pad”—wasn’t what it used to be. And I started wondering…
What if all this cushioning was making my feet weaker, not stronger?
Curious and inspired by the idea of more natural movement and foot strengthening, I started researching barefoot and minimalist shoes. After reading dozens of reviews and learning more about foot biomechanics, I decided to try the WHITIN Women’s Minimalist Wide Toe Box Barefoot Sneakers.
First Impressions: Comfort Meets Simplicity
From the moment I slipped them on, I felt something different in a very good way.
- The wide toe box provided my toes with ample room to spread and splay naturally.
- The canvas fabric was lightweight, breathable, and soft on my feet.
- The thin, flexible sole felt completely different from my usual thick soles—but not in a scary way. In fact, it felt freeing.
My First Walk: A Mile of Discovery
I took them out for a light one-mile walk around my neighborhood. WOW. My legs and feet felt the difference, but not in a painful way. It was more like waking up muscles that had been snoozing for years.
The minimalist design made me more aware of the following:
- My foot strike
- My gait
- How my body connects with the ground
This increased awareness is a gift, especially as we age. It helps us engage muscles we’ve ignored in traditional footwear and can improve balance, posture, and lower body strength, all of which are key players in aging gracefully.
Why Barefoot Shoes? The Science & Health Benefits
Here’s what I’ve learned and what makes me excited to keep using barefoot shoes as part of my healthy aging journey:
- Natural Foot Movement – Barefoot shoes allow your feet to function as they were designed, with a full range of motion and strength.
- Stronger Arches – Without artificial arch support, the muscles in your feet begin to strengthen, potentially reducing the risk of arch collapse over time.
- Improved Toe Alignment – The wide toe box encourages natural toe splay, which can help prevent or alleviate standard foot issues such as bunions, hammertoes, and plantar fasciitis.
- Better Balance & Proprioception – With a thinner sole, you’re closer to the ground and more aware of your movements; this improves your balance, reaction time, and coordination.
- Healthier Walking Posture – Minimalist shoes help re-align your stride, encouraging a more natural heel-to-toe roll through each step.
A growing number of physical therapists and movement experts support the use of minimalist shoes for foot rehab, balance training, and injury prevention, especially as we age.
Budget-Friendly & Worth Every Penny
The WHITIN barefoot sneakers I chose are amazingly affordable, just $45 on Amazon. Considering the quality, comfort, and potential health benefits, they’re a total steal.

Final Thoughts from the Feet Up
Trying barefoot shoes was a little out of my comfort zone, but I’m so glad I took the leap. It reminded me of an important lesson: We’re never too old to try something new, especially if it supports long-term health and vitality.
While I’ve adopted barefoot shoes for walking and everyday wear, I still use my trusted Brooks and Asics running shoes for all my running. For me, it’s about finding the right tool for the right activity.
I returned to the University of Florida Sports Performance Center in June for a Gait Mat Test and 3D Gait Analysis to gain a deeper understanding of how my body moves. One of the key questions I asked was about footwear and what’s truly best for me when it comes to walking and running. Are you curious about my experience and what I learned?
