It’s been 14 years since I embarked on my fitness and health journey, and looking back, I’m deeply grateful for every mistake I made along the way. Each misstep has been a valuable lesson that has shaped my path. I’m constantly learning and striving to improve my knowledge and strength.
Reflecting on all my mistakes would be an endless task! Instead, I’ll share my top seven mistakes. Over the next several weeks, I’ll reveal a mistake and the lessons I’ve learned.
Mistake #3: I’ll Do It Later
Back in 2010, I was not a morning person. The norm was to have three alarms to get me in motion and out of bed. I would often sleep in and end up running late for work. It was challenging for me to get up early and exercise. On these days, I would say, “I’ll do it later.” But the day would get away from me. After work, other things, such as people and events, would take priority. Dinner time was followed by relaxing and sitting on the couch. Often, I went to bed late, and my workout never happened. I was full of excuses.
Every single time I put my workout off, I would be sad and disappointed in myself. I felt like a failure. I had to shift my mindset if I wanted to reach my goals. NO EXCUSES! I knew deep down that the best way to get my daily exercise in was to do it first thing in the morning. Changing this habit was the hardest of all my unhealthy habits. Still, I decided to make myself and my workout a priority first thing every day and have not looked back. My desire to succeed was stronger than my desire to fail. You’ll find me at 5:30 am in the studio, joyfully working up a sweat because I decided to change.
Because I Can and I Will!
The Pitfalls of Procrastination
Procrastination is a sneaky adversary. It tells you there’s always more time and that you can do it later. But “later” often turns into “never.” This mindset can seriously derail your fitness journey and other aspects of your life. Here are some key pitfalls of procrastination:
1. Missed Opportunities for Progress: You miss out on incremental progress by putting off workouts. Consistency is vital in fitness, and skipping sessions means you’re not building the momentum needed for long-term success.
2. Increased Stress and Anxiety: Constantly delaying tasks can lead to stress and anxiety. You might think about your missed workouts and feel guilty, which only adds to the mental burden.
3. Erosion of Self-Discipline: Each time you put something off, you reinforce a habit of procrastination. Over time, this can erode your self-discipline, making it harder to stick to any routine or goal.
4. Lowered Self-Esteem: Continuously failing to meet your commitments to yourself can lead to feelings of inadequacy and lower self-esteem, creating a negative cycle that’s hard to break.
5. Lack of Real Progress: Procrastinating means you need to move forward. In fitness, this means not seeing the changes you want in your body and health. In life, it means stagnation and missed goals.
Lesson Learned
Procrastination is the enemy of progress. Prioritize and finish your workouts early so you don’t let the day slip away. Making exercise a non-negotiable part of your morning routine ensures it gets done and sets a positive tone for the rest of your day.
