Aging Younger with K-Factor

Aging Younger with K-Factor

John Kilbride

Your body is regenerating itself all the time. If you eat proper nutrition and exercise, the new cells you generate will have the appropriate fuel to be healthier and better than the ones being replaced.

The body replaces a new set of cells every seven to 10 years. Some of our most important parts are revamped even more rapidly, according to  Stanford University and Northrup.

Different cells regenerate at different speeds.

For instance:

  • Skin cells rejuvenate every two to four weeks.
  • Hair the natural fuzz has a life span of about six years for women and three years for men.
  • The liver renews itself with new cells every 150 to 500 days.
  • The stomach and intestine cells have a short life. They typically last only up to five days.
  • Bones regenerate almost always, but the complete process takes a full 10 years. As we age, our bones get thinner as the renewal process slows down.
  • The eye’s cornea can regenerate itself in as little as one day, the lens and other areas don’t change.
  • Neurons in the brain’s outside layer that governs memory, thought, language, attention, and consciousness – stay with us from birth to death. Other areas of the brain that helps us smell and learn, also rejuvenate, according to  Wade, Epstein.

“Good nutrition is essential for health,” says Frank Hu, associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health (SPH). Once-promising discoveries, including antioxidant supplements like beta-carotene, have turned out not to be magic pills.

“The single thing that comes close to a magic bullet, in terms of its strong and universal benefits, is exercise.”

During the last 10 years, epidemiologists like Hu have clearly demonstrated exercise’s protective effects against many serious diseases.

“Exercise is often overlooked,” as one medical researcher studying exercise in the elderly population, said.

We know exercise is good for us— understanding why and how it works, in an integrated way, is not easy.

It can affect every tissue in the body and, in many ways — metabolic, hormonal, neurological, and mechanical, according to Harvard Mag.

So what does all this science mean? If you eat proper nutrition and exercise, it’s good for us in many ways – we all know this. Still, most of us don’t know how to go about it efficiently and effectively.
